Why am I unable to use the FreeStyle Libre 2 app and the FreeStyle Libre 2 reader with the same sensor?

The FreeStyle Libre 2 and FreeStyle Libre 2 Plus sensors rely on Bluetooth in order for alarms* to function. The Bluetooth technology contained in the sensor is designed to pair with only one device, either the app† or the reader‡. Because the sensor can only pair Bluetooth with one device, alarms are only available on the device that started and paired with the sensor.

Alarms are a key feature of the FreeStyle Libre 2 system and were designed with safety in mind. To ensure that you receive alarms when you need them, including the Urgent Low Glucose Alarm§# on the app, the device that is used to start the sensor must be continued for the duration of the sensor.

The FreeStyle Libre 14 day system does allow you to use the app and reader together, as long as you first start the sensor with the reader. This is because the FreeStyle Libre 14 day system does not offer alarms, and the sensor does not have Bluetooth technology.

*Notifications will only be received when alarms are turned on and the sensor is within 20 feet unobstructed of the reading device. You must enable the appropriate settings on your smartphone to receive alarms and alerts, see the FreeStyle Libre 2 User’s Manual for more information.

† The FreeStyle Libre systems apps are only compatible with certain mobile devices and operating systems. Please check the Support section of our website for more information about device compatibility before using the apps. Use of the FreeStyle Libre systems apps may require registration with LibreView.

 ‡ The FreeStyle Libre 2 app and the FreeStyle Libre 2 reader have similar but not identical features. Fingersticks are required for treatment decisions when you see the Check Blood Glucose symbol and when your glucose alarms and readings from the system do not match symptoms or expectations.

 § The FreeStyle Libre 2 app also has a mandatory Urgent Low Glucose Alarm that lets users know when their glucose value is below 55 mg/dL.

 # To get the Urgent Low Glucose Alarm on your phone with the FreeStyle Libre 2 app, you will first need to start your FreeStyle Libre 2 sensor with your phone. If you do not start your FreeStyle Libre 2 sensor with your phone, you will not get the Urgent Low Glucose Alarm on your phone.

t:connect Mobile App: The t:connect mobile app is intended to be a secondary display for compatible Tandem Diabetes Care insulin pumps and is capable of wirelessly uploading pump data it receives into the t:connect web application. The t:connect mobile app is not intended to control an insulin pump and is not intended to be a replacement for the information displayed on your insulin pump. Dosing decisions should not be made based on the secondary display device. The user should follow instructions on the continuous glucose monitoring system and insulin pump.
